Join our 10-Week community of practice group for novice working interpreters! Starting your journey as an ASL interpreter can be exciting, challenging, and sometimes overwhelming—but you don’t have to do it alone! Our community of practice framework is designed to help novice interpreters build confidence, refine skills, and navigate the early stages of their careers in a supportive, judgment-free space. Each week, you’ll join a small group of peers virtually for engaging discussions, skill-building activities, and real-world insights into professional interpreting. We’ll cover everything from ethical decision-making and teaming strategies to managing stress, advocating for yourself, and preparing for the CASLI NIC exam. Facilitated by experienced professionals, this program fosters growth, connection, and long-term success. Whether you’re preparing for certification, seeking guidance on industry best practices, or simply looking for a community that understands your journey, this program is for you. Learning Objectives:
- Participants will analyze real-world interpreting scenarios and demonstrate appropriate professional decision-making through case-based discussions and applied reflections.
- Participants will demonstrate effective team interpreting practices with Deaf interpreters by applying role clarity, communication strategies, and collaboration protocols in simulated or observed settings.
- Participants will complete practice assessments and articulate strategies for ethical reasoning, message equivalence, and professional conduct.
- Participants will apply the Demand-Control Schema and teleological ethical frameworks to analyze interpreting scenarios and justify decision-making outcomes.

Language Access & Accessibility Policy

Primary languages of instruction and facilitation will be American Sign Language (ASL) and spoken English. The language(s) of instruction for each specific activity will be clearly identified in advance.
Participants who require spoken language interpretation, captioning, or other communication access services to participate fully may request reasonable accommodations during registration. Accommodation requests should be submitted at least 10 business days prior to the start of the program to ensure timely coordination.
Joyful Signing LLC will make reasonable efforts to meet all access requests and will confirm accommodations prior to the event. Requests received after the stated deadline will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and fulfilled when feasible.
