Culturally Responsive Interpreting Workshop

Workshop/Course Description:
Language deprivation is the lack of language exposure during a child’s age of acquisition which impacts language development, cognitive capabilities, academic success, and vocational options. Individuals from marginalized communities are more likely to suffer from language deprivation and less likely to have instructors who share their cultural background. For interpretation services to be truly effective and relevant, it’s essential for operators to understand the backgrounds and experiences of the diverse Deaf individuals they serve. Operators must demonstrate cultural sensitivity in order to reduce the marginalization of Deaf individuals. By being cognizant of historical and current systemic barriers, the impact of language deprivation, and the range of personal background experiences, interpreters can build trust and deliver high quality services.

Live workshop will be held from 6:00PM – 8:00PM
*1 hour of asynchronous coursework before & after the live session (2 hours total)

Target Audience:
Interpreters specializing in any modality for any age group or situation.

Educational Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to identify at least 3 impacts of language deprivation.
2. Participants will complete a social identity map to understand their own positionality.
3. Participants will be able to list at least 2 approaches they may use in their own interpreting assignments to better serve consumers from diverse backgrounds.
